all these places feel like home

Every now and then, I’ll be doing something completely ordinary, and I’ll look around and think, I can’t believe I’m actually here. It’s not so much that it’s so unbelievable–lots of American students spend a semester abroad, many students at UEA are American, even people I know have spent a semester in a foreign country.  And I suppose it’s not so unbelievable that I’d do it too; I’m more capable than I often believe, I think, and everyone says studying abroad is a hugely rewarding experience.

That’s all well and good, of course, but up until maybe the beginning of this year, I pretty much filed studying abroad under “things I’d love to do someday, sure, but chances are it’ll never happen”. And then I started realizing that it could happen–that, more to the point, I could make it happen if I wanted it–and here I am.

I don’t think Turkey ever did this to me, maybe because the pace of our time their was too frenetic. But England…I’m still sort of astonished to be here at all, astonished that I actually went through with it. I mean, I’m living in a foreign country. It’s not everyone can say that.
