in which I ponder British accents

Published by 100indecisions under england, turkey Edit This

I’ve been hoping that I’ll come home with a hint of a British accent, just because British accents are cool and I like how they sound, but considering how bad I’ve always been at accents, that isn’t very likely. (I can pronounce foreign words well enough–I did well in high-school Spanish, anyway, and I probably remembered the most Turkish of all the Fellows on our trip, which admittedly wasn’t much but at least I knew some and could pronounce it decently, I think. I just can’t do different accents in English. I know, it’s weird.)

I’ve been trying to pay attention, though, and while I can’t really tell apart different British accents (London alone has several) and I’m rarely even sure whether I’m hearing Scottish or Irish or even Welsh (look, if I heard them one after the other, I could tell which is which, but independently, it’s a little different), mostly I seem to notice them in relation to characters on Doctor Who. “Well, he sounds a little like David Tennant, so he must be Scottish. Heh, he sounds like Clyde. OMG she sounds like Jackie, and she sounds like Chrissie. SCARY.” Not very helpful, I know, since I have no idea what accents those characters have, or whether, say, Chrissie just sounds daft because she is or because most people with that sort of accent are as flaky as she is.
