in which I get lost, as usual
Did Cambridge today. Sort of. The UEA Union of Students organized with some other universities to have a student protest against high fees in Cambridge, and they were providing free buses to it for any students who wanted to sign up–so of course I went along, because I hadn’t seen Cambridge and figured, hey, I need to see some of this place since it looks like I won’t get to much beyond what I’ve already seen and a little London. I sort of planned to slip away near the beginning, explore Cambridge on my own, and come back in time for the bus, but I ended up not, partly because I’d have got lost (which I did anyway) and didn’t know what there was to see, and partly because I was occupied in taking pictures for Concrete.
So yeah, I did some walking around with a placard and some chanting. Not a lot. Mostly I took pictures and found the whole thing mildly amusing. Free higher education? Really? That’s what I was marching for? (Granted, someone pointed out that most of the people in Parliament had the benefit of free education, which I did not know and need to look into.) Half of them were socialists and kept trying to hand out leaflets. Annnd then we had about an hour and a half of free time so I started wandering into shops on the way back, which would’ve been fine except I didn’t have a map and didn’t know where I was going, and I ran out of landmarks (shops I recognized, rather) about halfway there. I must’ve tried going five different directions until I hit on the right one and started seeing landmarks again, and then got lost again, and yeah. It was lots of fun. Amazingly I only had to call someone twice and was only 15 minutes late to the bus.
Cambridge is pretty, though, for what it’s worth. Also I bought too much even though it was partly gifts.
