in which food continues to puzzle me
So cheddar cheese is orange, right? For that matter, generally the only common white cheeses I can think of are swiss and mozzarella. But cheddar is always orange.
Well, when I had my one major grocery trip last month, it took me quite a while to figure out what cheese to buy, because all the cheddar cheese was white.
I mean, I know it makes no difference at all in the taste and it’s just a coloring thing, but I was looking for orange cheese, and when the only orange cheese I found wasn’t cheddar, I was thrown, enough that I didn’t even think to check the white cheese for some time. And even when I realized that the cheddar was white, I was hesitant to buy it because I thought it might be a slightly different kind of cheese or something. It’s not—tastes totally normal—but it does make me wonder, why the difference? Is any cheese naturally orange? If not, why did the coloring process start in the first place? Did people think orange cheese was just better?
